Chapter 11

“You don’t really have to come,” I told Flynn the next day. I’d regretted inviting him the moment he had agreed to come along, even though it had felt like the right thing to do. He was Jacob’s family and he had as much right to be there as I did.

“No, I want to. I haven’t actually been out there since it happened. I should have. Should I have brought flowers or something?” He glanced at me, a hint of vulnerability in his gaze. Maybe he needed this.

“No. I just go, tidy things up, and sometimes leave pretty stones.”

He quirked a brow. “Pretty stones?”

I shrugged. “If I take flowers they’d just rot and I’d have to clean them up on my next visit. So, I take him any cool stones that I find. You want me to drive?” I asked, holding up my car keys.

“Sure.”

I unlocked the car and we climbed in. I switched the radio on to avoid any awkward silences before pulling away.

“Did you really spend every day at the hospital with him?” Flynn asked.

“Under the circumstances, they let me take classes online. His mother was too busy finding the bottom of a bottle, and it wasn’t like he wanted his dad to be there. If I’d known there was anyone else, I would have found you.” I stared out the front window. “He should have told me.”

We’d never kept secrets.

“He had you, he didn’t need anyone else.”

Was that something Jacob had told him? It was exactly the kind of dumb thing he would say. I took an unsteady breath. “Do you think… could magic have saved him, if I’d known how to use it?”

It was the one question that had been spinning around in my head since the first moment I’ve believed in magic. I just hadn’t dared ask it.

“No, I don’t think so. Magical healing isn’t that advanced, and a witch has to train for years to be able to heal wounds they can’t see. Even then, it’s probably not as effective as modern medicine.”

I bit my lip. “Thanks. It’s been weighing on me, the thought that I could have saved him.”

“If it could have been done, I’d have found a way.”

In a way, it was a relief to know I wasn’t the only one carrying this burden. Flynn couldn’t be all bad if he was related to Jacob. And he had every right to be mad at the world after what Jacob’s father had done.

He pulled up in the car park and I led the way to the spot. I could have walked that path in my sleep at this point. We stopped in front of the stone and my breath hitched. Seeing his name in stone would never get easier.

“There’s magic here, did you spell these?” Flynn after a long, heavy moment of silence.

“No, I mean, I don’t think so.” But, now that he mentioned it, I sensed magic too. “Well, not on purpose. What is it?”

“Just basic protection spells. They ward off anyone with bad intentions and encourage positive energy.
